The Dylan Bundy Treatment

Gallardo was a high school star in Texas who, like Dylan Bundy, wasn?t afraid to toss some innings. In 2010, Bundy threw 181 pitches for Owasso High School in Oklahoma during the course of a doubleheader. In 2004, Gallardo recorded 25 strikeouts in 11 innings of work for Trimble Tech in Texas.

Contrary to the legend, however, Gallardo did not follow up outings for his high school or travel teams by pitching in his dad?s adult baseball league.

Yo with some early perspective:

"Felt pretty good, but the results weren't there," Gallardo said. "Made some mistakes. More with the slider. That is the frustrating part. The consistency and the command is not there. I was able to command the fastball and that is one of the positive things that I did today. To command the fastball away to a right-handed hitter, so that's a good sign."

What does he need to work on with his slider?

"Just finishing out in front. I think the most important thing, I was getting around it a little bit too much. That was causing it to stay right there or back up. That's not good. I threw a couple that were good and the other ones just weren't there. It could be one of the last things to come.

"I'm not saying it is easier for a hitter to prepare, but once you get that timing down. You can ask any hitter, once they get that, they can feel comfortable. For a pitcher, you haven't pitched in a game in six months. The most important thing is feeling comfortable out there. Getting where your mechanics are right. It takes time and is frustrating for sure. We have to remember it is spring and there is a long way to go."

"Yeah, I feel fine. I feel good," he said. "Just signing a week late, might be a little behind. More mechanics-wise, finding that release point. I'm not worried about it. The main thing is getting my work in and building up that pitch count."

Gallardo faced the minimum 15 batters over 5 innings.

The one single that he allowed was erased on a double play.

Nice piece in MASN with interview with the guy:

Early in my career, to be honest, you want to get that strikeout and that ran my pitch count up. As I got older, I realized it is a little bit easier to get that ground ball.

That is just Davey Johnson pitching 101. Nothing wrong with Ks at the right time, but to just go for K's, gets that pitch count up.
